Medical Team
Medical Director – Dr George Janko - Sports and Orthopaedic Physician
Dr. George Janko has had a long-term interest in preventive medicine for the body, mind and soul.
As a student he started researching the effect of stress on the cardio-vascular system and became a keen supporter of self-hypnosis techniques. After a stint at Peter MacCallum Cancer Clinic to do radiotherapy he began his career in sports medicine in 1980 when he recognised that a healthy mind was not enough.
Dr Janko opened Melbourne's second multidisciplinary sports medicine centre, originally the Sportsman's Clinic (now McKinnon Sports Medicine) in 1983, and subsequently became one of the founding directors of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre. He is the medical director of McKinnon Sport Medicine and the Institute of Health and Fitness, the education arm.
Since 2002 the Institute of Health and Fitness has been a fully Registered Training Organization and has delivered courses of the highest academic quality for personal trainers and fitness instructors. Many Institute of Health and Fitness students have subsequently taught for other course providers.
George's passion for using biomechanics and his knowledge garnered from an integrated approach integrating multiple disciplines, has assisted his diagnostic skills and treatment regimes for injuries and chronic conditions.
Together with a local division of General Practice, of which he was a director until recently, he runs courses to teach General Practitioners about gyms and strength training as a means of improving patient health.
He was team doctor for Melbourne Uni Blues FC, Melbourne FC, Australian Powerlifting, the Reds Baseball team, and continues to be the doctor for the VAFA State representative Squad.
More recently Dr Janko has studied the latest research on male menopause and anti-ageing medicine. This is an area that he believes has been neglected by conservative medical forces and is certainly not mainstream. Nevertheless studies and male hormone level measurements certainly show how these changes may affect men's health equally or even more than menopause affects women's health.
George is a member of the Australian College of Sports Physicians, the International Society for Hypnosis, and the Association for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. He has an MBA from Melbourne Business School.
He loves tennis, gyms, and cycling, but also loves to relax with a good book and loves his sleep. He is married to Karen Inge, a leading sports dietitian, and they have two children of whom they are very proud.
Dr Simon Hillman and
Dr Tim March are also key members of the medical team.
